How to enable or disable your internet network connection

By Mitz

Free computer Helpinternet network connection

Sometimes when you have internet problems you can disable then enable your network connection to try and fix the problem. Disabling your internet network connection is like turning your modem off at the switch. It will disable any internet connection, including wireless.

Reasons for Disabling your internet network connection:

  • When you have an IP address conflict on your network, disabling and enabling your internet connection will renew your automatic IP's and sometimes may fix the problem.

  • If you have more than one network adapter installed, it is better to disable the ones you are not using as they may interfere with each other.

  • Disabling individual connections when they are not being used can improve network reliability and security.

  • This is a good way to stop your computer from communicating with the internet. Sometimes viruses can send information over the internet. It is good to disable your internet when trying to get rid of a particularly bad virus.

How to enable or disable your internet network connection

In Windows XP there are two ways to enable or disable your internet network connection. The first way is to simply double click on the network connection icon in the taskbar. On the general tab, click on disable.

The second way to enable or disable your internet network connection is to open network connections in the control panel. enable or disable internet connection

  1. Go to Start Menu and choose Control Panel

  2. Double click on the Network Connections Icon.

  3. The Network Connections dialog box  will appear.

  4. Right click on your network adapter. A menu will appear. Choose Disable.

Notes:

  • If your internet connection is already disabled, you will have the choice to enable it. If it is enabled, you will have the choice to disable.

  • Windows does not allow Enable or  Disable functionality for Dial-up network connections. The closest thing to disabling internet connections is to physically unplug your phone line, reset your modem, or maybe uninstall your modem.

  • In Windows XP Service Pack 2 you can double click on the network connections icon in your taskbar, choose the support tab, then press repair. Windows will automatically disable and re-enable the connection and try and find the problem for you.
