How to activate Microsoft Windows XP or Vista over the phone

By Mitz

Free computer Tips

This isn't an article on how to activate an illegal copy of Windows XP or Windows Vista. It is just an easy way to activate your genuine copy of windows over the phone. If you are anything like me, and hate wasting time, you should avoid pressing the wrong buttons in this process as it can take forever.

  1. If the nagging activation message is gone you can start activation by going to the start menu>Accessories>System Tools>Activate Windows

  2. Choose your country from the Drop down list.

  3. Ring the toll free number. Why anyone would want to use the toll number is beyond me?

  4. Press 2 to activate a copy of Windows Xp or Vista

  5. Make sure you have your installation id ready.

  6. Enter 72 numbers in 6 at a time.

  7. Hold the line

  8. Press 1 if you are installing windows on a new pc. I always press this one even if it is a secondhand pc. If you choose another number it will take you longer to finish.

  9. Press 1 if you have uninstalled windows off the previous pc it was installed on. If you choose another option a customer service operator will want to ask you some interrogating questions before giving you a confirmation ID.

Notes:

  • To tell if you have a genuine copy of Windows you will need a COA sticker, An original Windows disc that matches the version of your COA, and that same copy installed on your computer. If you cannot activate Windows when you have these items there is something wrong. Windows Certificate of Authenticity
