Apply a menu template to a folder in Windows XP or Vista    Applies to Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista

Applying a template to a folder is often an overlooked feature in Windows. Even I have been guilty of moving music to a music folder so I can have access to the menu that comes with that template. If only I had realized that you could just make any folder a music folder or a picture folder.

What is a Folder template?

A folder template changes the way your folder looks when you open it. For example if you open the music folder you will see a link to play all music and if you open a pictures folder you will see a link to see a slide show. However it would be pointless to have a link to play all music when you are in the pictures folder.

How do you apply a new template to a folder?
  1. Go to the folder that you want to apply the template to.
  2. Go to the menu at the top and choose view.
  3. Then choose customize this folder.
  4. The folder properties should open and start on the customize tab.
  5. Press the drop down arrow to see your choices for a new template.

In Windows Vista, if the file, edit , view, tools, help menu is not there press the ALT key to make them show.

What are the advantages to applying a menu template to a folder?

Applying a folder template can be very useful if you store your pictures or music in another area besides the default allocated folders. For example you could store your pictures in a folder on an external backup drive and apply the picture folder template to it.

Notes on applying a folder template:

  • Applying a  picture template to a folder with pictures in it is handy if you like having slide shows. You can just click on the slide show link and all the pictures in there will be on your desktop.
  • You can make folders with your favorite music, then apply a music template so you can press play all to hear them all play like a playlist.
