| | How to
clean inside your computer case safely.
Free Computer Help By Mitz
When someone thinks of cleaning inside a computer, they usually refer to
the actual file system of the computer. Deleting files unwanted files and
defragging your computer are just two ways to clean inside your computer. But
what about cleaning inside your actual computer case.
The average computer user completely forgets, and
sometimes doesn't even know how important it is to clean inside your computer
case. And yes, it will involve physically opening the computer case to very
carefully clean inside.
Did you know that it is just as important for you to
clean inside your computer case as it is to clean the files out and keep up with
your
Computer Maintenance. If dust builds up on
the inside of your computer case it can be fatal to any components that are
covered. For example if dust accumulates on your processor heat sink and fan it
will eventually cause the processor to overheat and die. The fan slows down from
the weight of the dust and therefore your cooling methods are not working. You
can prevent these stressful computer breakdowns by regularly cleaning inside
your computer case.
Different computer cases open in different ways. You
may have a desktop computer tower that the sides slide off or you may have a
desktop that opens when you press certain buttons. Either way there are some
safety precautions to follow when
opening your
computer case to clean inside. Unfortunately if you have a laptop it is a
bit harder to clean inside the case and really should be done by a professional.
There are too many tiny screws and bits to take out just to get into the case.
After you have followed all the correct procedures
to opening your computer case, including removing all plugs from your system,
then you are ready to clean. Here are a few tips on
opening your
computer case.
Tools to use to clean inside your
computer case.
Fancy cleaning tools are available from computer
outlets or even hardware stores, but can be very expensive. I usually use
everyday household items that end up doing the same job anyway.. Here is a list
of some of the tools I use to clean inside my computer.
- Air compressor
- Soft paint brush

-
Compressed air can
- Vacuum
- Dust Mask
Air compressor: I steel my husbands air
compressor. There is an attachment that just blows air for cleaning all sorts of
things, and is great for inside your computer case. I prefer an attachment with
a rubber nozzle instead of the steel one, incase I accidentally touch the
motherboard. This is a very easy and quick way to clean inside your computer
case. Keep your distance though.
- The air is very powerful, do not
underestimate it.
- Blow the air from about 200mm away.
- Do not go near a spinning fan as I have
knocked the top of my finger off accidentally.
- When blowing air through the power supply,
make sure you do it from both ends to dislodge dust.
- Only stop when you see no more dirt or dust.
Soft paint brush: After you have used an
air compressor you can use the brush to clean inside the computer case.
Sometimes the metal bits have dust that is stuck to it.
- Gently brush the dust from inside the case. Make
sure you do not accidentally move any wires or connections.
- You can also use this on the fan, but once
you have loosened dust, quickly blow it out again.

Compressed air can:
When you clean inside your computer case,
a disposable compressed air can will blow the dust out. Of course it
is not as good as a real compressor, however it will do.
- Be sure to keep the can upright,
otherwise it will leak liquid.
- Always read the instructions on the can.

Vacuum: You should not use a vacuum
cleaner to clean inside your computer case unless your are a professional. Some
people use this to suck the dust from inside their computer case, however a
normal household one will not do.
- It is best to use a battery operated,
handheld vacuum specifically designed for this purpose.
- Household vacuums cause static electricity
which can damage your computer components.
Dust Mask: If you are using a compressor
to clean inside your computer case you should also be using a dust mask. Even if
you are using a paint brush the dust will be flying through the air.
| Cleaning the exterior and components Water:
This should only be used for the outside of the computer case. Use water
sparingly. It should only be used to slightly dampen your cloth. You do not
want water dripping all over your computer and end up inside your computer
cases on your components.
Rubbing alcohol: I always choose to use
this before water as it evaporates fast. It is also great for cleaning dirt and
oily marks from the inside the computer case, mouse and keyboard.
Cloth: (lint free) You should use a cloth
to clean the exterior of the case, the mouse, cords, and keyboard. Only slightly
damp. Fold your cloth over a few times to get in between the keys on the
keyboard.
Vacuum: You can use a vacuum cleaner to
extract dust and food crumbs from your keyboard. Do not use it to clean inside
your computer case as it may damage your components.
Cotton Wool or Swabs: Also good for
reaching those hard to reach places.
Toothbrush
Car dash oil: This is great for blending
in scratches on monitors and sometimes cases, like a Dell GX270 desktop. Don't
use too much, as you do not want it dripping into the monitor air vents.
Eucalyptus oil: I use this to remove
permanent pen from monitors or cases. Just put some on a cloth and rub on
the writing and it will start to dissolve.
Cleaning your inside your computer case regularly, can prolong its
working life. We could all do with less computer troubles and this is an easy
task for most people. Removing things like dust, smoke residue, dirt, or pet
hair can leave your system to breathe freely.
So why not clean inside your computer case now.
You will be shocked at the amount of dust and dirt that is in there.
