Hi all! I know a fair amount about computers, but I wouldn't call myself an expert. I'm looking for some opinions. I'm doing some research for my mom, who is looking for a solid but affordable computer. She's looking to spend as little as possible while still getting a quality machine. She'll mostly be using it for internet browsing, email, word processing, online courses, maybe some video watching, music downloading, etc. - pretty basic stuff.

She likes the idea of a laptop so she can move around the house with it, but doesn't really "need" a laptop. I'm kind of leery of cheap laptops - we're talking in the $400-$500 range. For example, I saw this Toshiba Satellite, and this sounds pretty good, but I worry about a cheap laptop's longevity.

It seems like you get more bang for your buck with a laptop, and I know that, in general, it's must easier/cheaper to repair and upgrade desktops, but I could really use some opinions, recommendations, etc. Thoughts anyone? Help me! I don't want to steer her in the wrong direction!!

The main problem with laptops is when they are out of waranty they cost a fortune to repair!!! And there is the problem with the battery dying and the power adapter over heating and dying too...

I have had a fair few laptop computers and the battery and the power adapter always go first.. Even worse for a second hand laptop!!!

They are nice to have as a spare, however a desktop is cheaper, easier to fix, and for the price of a laptop, the desktop will be twice as fast.

hi i don't want to rain on your mom's parade but
unless she needs a laptop stay away from it and stay with
your instincts and get her a desktop
much cheaper and you are right, easier to repair and to upgrade
hope i don't offend your mom, but i agree with you on this one
cheers
